BIGTREETECH ViViD Multi-Material Filament Changer for Klipper 3D Printers

BIGTREETECH's ViViD is a multi-material filament management system for Klipper-based 3D printers like Voron 2.4, Trident, VzBot, and RatRig. Each ViViD handles 4 spools with active drying, RFID identification, and automatic filament backup. Chain up to 4 units together to unlock 16-color printing capability for vibrant multi-material prints.

Key Features

  • Multi-color printing: Print up to 16 colors with chained units for complex multi-material models, color logos, and full color figurines
  • Active filament drying: Built-in cross-fan dries filament during printing for hygroscopic materials like Nylon, PETG, ABS, and ASA
  • RFID detection: Automatically sets color and temperature when loading tagged spools (open-standard protocols)
  • Automatic fallback: Switches to a backup spool when the primary runs out, preventing failed prints
  • Klipper integration: Direct firmware support with no proprietary controllers or middleware (requires toolhead with Filametrix or A4T cutter)
  • RGB status indicators: Real-time visual feedback on filament status with customizable lighting
  • Klipper screen and web UI control: Manage filament types and drying without extra hardware
  • Open-source friendly: Supports BIGTREETECH MMS or Happy Hare firmware

ViViD is one of the most affordable open-source alternatives to proprietary AMS systems, giving Klipper users professional multi-color and multi-material printing without restrictions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A
A single ViViD handles up to 4 filaments (slots T0 through T3). You can chain up to 4 units together for 16-color printing. Voron printer users can also 3D print a modified exhaust filter housing from BIGTREETECH that simplifies tube routing and lets the ViViD mount on top of the enclosure.
A
ViViD works with Klipper-based 3D printers such as Voron 2.4, Trident, and VzBot. Your toolhead must have an integrated filament cutter such as Filametrix or A4T.
A
RFID lets the ViViD automatically detect filament type, color, and recommended print temperature when you load a tagged spool. The ViViD reads tags following open-standard protocols, so it isn't locked to any single brand. Note: Bambu Lab RFID tags may not be readable due to structural limitations, but custom labels can be manually transferred when changing spools.
A
The automatic filament backup feature switches to the next slot in sequence. When T0 runs out, the system loads T1, then T2, and so on. For this to work, your backup slots must contain the same filament type and color as the primary, and the Purge function must be enabled.
A
Yes! ViViD ships with BIGTREETECH's MMS (Multi-Material System) software, but you can switch to the open-source Happy Hare firmware if desired. For Happy Hare setup, refer to its official documentation.
A
Yes, if you have KlipperScreen installed. The ViViD installer optionally adds a modified KlipperScreen version with built-in filament management menus. You can also control the system through Mainsail or any web-based Klipper interface using MMS macro commands.
