Why are these files for sale and not available for free?
I received many questions like “How I say thanks and support you?”
I had no answer to that at the time. I'm still a novice creator and I do not qualify for the current Printables Clubs requirements. Also, I do not think that it makes any sense in terms of fairness to support my work on a subscription basis.
After Printables introduced the ability to sell individual models I think this is a better way how to give more and get something in return. And more fair in this particular case.
Is this purchase mandatory?
No. Not at all. Support if you want and most importantly - if you can.
Can I build it without the STLs?
Yes. The Stealth Press Zero project is published under a GPL-3 license and the CAD (.STEP) file is free to download. In 99% of the cases, this CAD file will give you more than enough information to finish the build. It has all you need - down to the single bolt and heat-set insert.
