The Smart Orbiter v3.5 is the latest evolution of LDO's Orbiter extruders. It keeps the same compact dual-drive platform while making improvements to fan noise, filament sensing, and extrusion precision, tuning the parts of the design that matter most.

Because the v3.5 builds directly on its predecessor, the v3.0, its core technical characteristics carry over largely unchanged. Full specifications available further down the page.

Redesigned Front Heatsink

Smoother airflow and 10 dB less fan noise

The main change in the v3.5 is a redesigned front heatsink. Its new fin shape reduces air turbulence and helps eliminate the annoying high-pitched "mosquito" fan noise, for a noticeably quieter extruder, around 10 dB lower. The heatsink is built to work with both the LDO hotend and the E3D Revo ecosystem.


Tighter Tolerances, Fewer Parts

Heatsink and filament guide are combined

On the v3.5, the front heatsink and filament guide are combined into one. Merging them tightens control over the filament path and its distance to the filament sensor, while cutting the number of parts that need to be aligned during assembly. This makes the design less sensitive to manufacturing tolerances.

The input ring has also been reshaped to accept a small PTFE coupler, so the PTFE tube is mechanically retained rather than held by friction alone. The heatsink and hub housing are now 0.5 mm wider, seating the left-side mounting surface just outside the stepper body for better mounting alignment.

A More Precise Drive

Knurled spider-shaft and shoulder-bolt tension lever

Extrusion accuracy comes down to how well the drive gear is centered. The v3.5 introduces a new knurled spider-shaft, in place of the previous octagon-shaped precision shaft. It's easier to manufacture and lets the drive gear be press-fitted with better alignment. As a result, extrusion is more stable and prints come out smoother, with fewer of the diagonal artifacts that poor centering can cause. The secondary drive-gear tension lever now pivots on a custom M3 shoulder bolt instead of a standard M3 screw, so it rides on a smooth surface rather than on the screw threads.


Reliable Filament Sensing

Built on the proven Orbiter v2.0 smart sensor

The filament sensor has been redesigned around the same sensor switch used in the Orbiter v2.0 smart filament sensor. That brings more reliable filament detection, less friction in the upper section of the extruder, and dependable runout detection without the false events that can interrupt a print. The new sensor board also carries two RGB LEDs instead of one.


Hotend compatibility

Built for LDO and E3D Revo

The v3.5 front heatsink is designed to fit both the LDO hotend (paired with the new TFN nozzle for improved maximum flow rate and layer precision) and the E3D Revo ecosystem, so you can set it up to suit your printer.

The E3D Revo hotend sits 4 mm longer than the LDO hotend. You will need to account for that in your mount and Z-offset.
